Balanced heterozygotes are GFP+ Unc and segregate GFP+ Unc (heterozygotes), non-GFP non-Unc spo-11(me44) homozygotes, and dead eggs (nT1 homozygotes). spo-11(me44) homozygotes are viable and produce more than 90% dead eggs (a large fraction of the survivors are males — strong Him phenotype); cytologically they lack chiasmata in diakinesis-stage oocytes and lack RAD-51 foci.
